What Do AAA and AAAA Mean in Cannabis?
If you’ve spent any time looking at cannabis flower, you’ve probably come across terms like AA, AAA and AAAA.
You may also hear people refer to AAAA cannabis as “quads” or “top shelf.”
But what do these grades actually mean—and does AAAA automatically mean you’re getting better cannabis?
The first thing to know is that AA, AAA and AAAA are informal cannabis grading terms. They aren’t an official or standardized Canadian grading system.
That means there isn’t one universal checklist that every grower or seller follows when assigning these grades.
Still, the terms are commonly used to describe the perceived overall quality of cannabis flower. Understanding what people generally mean by them can make comparing flower a little easier.
What Does AAA Cannabis Mean?
AAA, sometimes called “triple-A,” is generally used to describe cannabis considered to be good or high quality.
Flower described as AAA may be evaluated based on characteristics such as:
- Bud structure
- Trim quality
- Visible trichomes
- Aroma
- Freshness
- Moisture
- Overall appearance
However, because AAA isn’t an official grade, the quality can vary considerably from one product or seller to another.
One person’s AAA may be another person’s AAAA.
That’s why it’s better to look at the actual flower and its characteristics rather than relying entirely on the grade.
What Does AAAA Cannabis Mean?
AAAA, pronounced “quad-A” and often shortened to “quads,” is commonly used to describe flower marketed as premium or top-shelf quality.
When someone describes cannabis as AAAA, they’re generally suggesting that the flower stands out in several areas rather than just one.
People may look for characteristics such as:
Appearance: Attractive, well-developed buds with good structure.
Trichomes: A noticeable covering of resinous trichomes.
Trim: Flower that has been carefully trimmed without excessive leaves or stems.
Aroma: A distinctive and noticeable aroma.
Freshness: Flower that has been dried, cured and stored appropriately.
Bud structure: Healthy, intact buds consistent with the genetics of the plant.
Again, none of these characteristics officially make cannabis “AAAA.”
The term is subjective.
What Are “Quads”?
If you see someone talking about quads, they’re generally talking about AAAA cannabis.
“Quad” simply comes from the four As in AAAA.
It’s commonly used as shorthand for flower considered premium or top shelf.
But just like AAAA, “quad” isn’t an official quality designation.
Is AAAA Cannabis More Potent Than AAA?
Not necessarily.
This is one of the biggest misconceptions about cannabis grading.
Quality and THC potency aren’t the same thing.
A flower marketed as AAAA doesn’t automatically contain more THC than one marketed as AAA.
THC percentage tells you about the concentration of a particular cannabinoid. A quality grade is generally intended to describe broader characteristics of the flower.
A lower-THC flower could still have excellent bud structure, abundant trichomes, a distinctive aroma and careful curing.
Likewise, a high THC percentage doesn’t automatically make flower premium quality.

Trichomes Can Tell You Something About the Flower
One characteristic people often examine when assessing cannabis flower is its trichome coverage.
Trichomes are the tiny glandular structures that give some cannabis flower its frosty or crystal-covered appearance.
These structures produce and store cannabinoids and terpenes.
A flower with well-preserved trichomes can certainly look impressive, but trichome appearance alone shouldn’t be used to assign quality.

Don’t Forget About Aroma
Aroma is another characteristic commonly considered when people talk about high-quality cannabis.
Cannabis can have incredibly varied aromas—from citrus and fruit to pine, earth, spice and floral notes.
Many of these aromas are associated with compounds called terpenes.
Terpene profiles can vary between cannabis varieties, giving different flower its distinctive aromatic characteristics.
Our What Are Terpenes in Cannabis? guide explains how these compounds work.
Bud Size Doesn’t Determine the Grade
It’s easy to assume that huge cannabis buds must be better than small ones.
That’s not necessarily true.
Smaller buds from a plant can still contain cannabinoids, terpenes and trichomes.
Larger buds may receive more attention because they’re visually impressive, while smaller buds—often called smalls—may be sold for less.
That can make smalls an interesting option for people who care more about the characteristics of the flower than having the biggest buds in the bag.
We’ll explore that more in our What Are Cannabis Smalls? guide.
So How Should You Judge Cannabis Flower?
Instead of buying something solely because it has four As beside its name, look at the bigger picture.
Consider:
- Overall appearance
- Trichome coverage
- Aroma
- Bud structure
- Trim
- Freshness
- Moisture
- Cannabinoid information
- Terpene information, when available
- How the flower has been stored
No single characteristic tells you everything.
That’s why understanding the flower itself is more useful than simply memorizing grades.
AAA vs. AAAA: The Bottom Line
AAA and AAAA are informal terms used to communicate perceived cannabis flower quality.
AAA generally suggests good or high-quality flower, while AAAA—or “quads”—is commonly used for flower marketed as premium or top shelf.
But there is no universal AAA or AAAA cannabis grading standard.
Different growers, producers and sellers may use these terms differently.
And perhaps most importantly:
AAAA doesn’t automatically mean higher THC, and higher THC doesn’t automatically mean better cannabis.
Learning to look at trichomes, aroma, freshness, cannabinoids, terpenes and the overall condition of the flower gives you much more useful information than the number of As beside its name.
